Industrial LCD Touch Screen Laminating Process Engineering Guide

1. Overview

Industrial LCD touch screens are widely used in industrial control equipment, medical devices, automotive terminals, and smart instrumentation, which put forward strict requirements on high and low temperature resistance, vibration resistance, dustproof and waterproof performance, and display clarity. The screen lamination process is the core process that determines the overall reliability and display effect of the touch screen.
At present, industrial touch screen lamination is divided into two mainstream processes: frame lamination (air layer lamination) and full lamination (OCA optical glue lamination). Full lamination is the preferred process for high-end industrial terminals due to its zero air layer, high light transmittance, strong environmental adaptability and no fogging.

2. Process Classification & Structural Features

2.1 Full Lamination (OCA Lamination, Industrial High-End Standard)
Structure: Cover Glass (CG) + Touch Panel (TP) + OCA Optical Adhesive + LCD Display Module. The internal gap is completely filled with optical glue without air layer.
Advantages
  • High light transmittance, low reflection, excellent sunlight visibility
  • No fogging, no dust ingress, good dustproof and waterproof performance
  • Integrated structure, strong anti-vibration and anti-drop capability
  • Stable touch sensitivity, no ghosting and delay
Disadvantages
  • High process requirements, dependent on dust-free workshop and professional equipment
  • High production cost and difficult rework
2.2 Frame Lamination (Air Layer Lamination, Cost-Effective Type)
Structure: The TP cover is fixed on the LCD iron frame through foam double-sided adhesive, with an air layer reserved between the touch screen and the display screen.
Advantages
  • Simple process, low equipment cost, convenient maintenance and rework.
Disadvantages
  • Serious light reflection, poor sunlight visibility; easy to accumulate dust and fog in high and low temperature alternating environments, poor industrial environmental adaptability.
3. Pre-Production Preparation & Environmental Standards
Industrial screen lamination must be completed in a dust-free workshop. The standard is Class 1000~Class 10000, with constant temperature and humidity control: temperature 22±3℃, humidity 45%~60%. Excessively high humidity causes water bubble defects, while excessively low humidity generates static electricity and damages TP induction circuits.
3.2 Core Material Selection (Industrial Grade)
  • OCA Optical Adhesive: Select industrial-grade low-shrinkage, UV-resistant and low-craze adhesive; conventional thickness 50μm/100μm/175μm; operating temperature range -40℃~85℃, avoiding high-temperature glue overflow and low-temperature delamination.
  • TP & LCD Module: Strictly screen industrial-grade modules to ensure no screen leakage, no dead pixels, and intact ITO circuits.
3.3 Production Equipment Configuration
Vacuum full lamination machine, plasma cleaning machine, high-pressure defoaming machine (autoclave), ion fan, static eliminator, professional positioning fixture, IPA cleaning solution, dust-free wiping cloth, reliability aging test chamber.

4. Standard OCA Full Lamination Process Flow

The whole process follows the closed-loop standard of inspection-cleaning-activation-lamination-defoaming-testing-aging verification to ensure industrial-grade stable yield.
Step 1: IQC Incoming Inspection
Inspect LCD for bright/dark spots, scratches, light leakage and FOG pin damage; inspect TP for ITO circuit breakage, scratches and insulation failure; verify OCA for no creases, dust and bubbles. Defective materials are strictly prohibited from entering the lamination process.
Step 2: Precision Cleaning
Wipe the fitting surfaces of LCD and TP with IPA professional cleaning solution and dust-free cloth, then blow off surface fine dust with ion wind. Strictly avoid residual water marks, fiber debris and manual contact with the optical surface to prevent black spots and foreign matter defects after lamination.
 
Step 3: Plasma Surface Activation
This is a necessary process for industrial-grade lamination. Plasma bombards the fitting surface to improve the surface dyne value, enhance the adhesion between OCA glue and the screen, and effectively solve the problems of edge delamination and bubble recurrence caused by high and low temperature cycles.
 
Step 4: OCA Pre-Lamination
Position the TP through a special fixture, tear off the first layer of OCA release film, automatically laminate the OCA optical glue on the inner side of the TP cover plate, remove preliminary bubbles, and reserve the second layer of release film for vacuum lamination.
 
Step 5: Vacuum Precision Lamination (Core Process)
Place the TP with OCA glue and LCD module into the vacuum cavity, pump out the internal air to avoid air inclusion, complete accurate alignment (positioning tolerance ±0.1mm for industrial screens), and perform constant-pressure slow lamination. Stable vacuum and pressure parameters effectively avoid large bubbles and screen compression damage.
Step 6: High-Pressure Defoaming
Put the pre-laminated semi-finished products into the autoclave for high-temperature and high-pressure defoaming. Standard process parameters: pressure 0.4~0.6MPa, temperature 40~50℃, time 20~40min. Micro bubbles in the glue layer are eliminated through high-pressure infiltration to ensure long-term no bubble recurrence.
Step 7: Appearance & Electrical Performance Test
Light up the screen to inspect for foreign matter, black spots, residual bubbles, glue overflow and misalignment; conduct full touch test to verify touch sensitivity, line continuity and no dead touch points to eliminate functional defective products.
Step 8: Industrial Grade Reliability Aging
Different from consumer products, industrial screens must pass environmental aging tests before mass production:
  • High and low temperature cycle test.
  • High temperature and high humidity test.
  • Vibration and drop resistance reliability test.
