Demystifying Monitor Response Time: A Gamer's Guide

What is Monitor Response Time?

Response time refers to the speed at which a liquid crystal display (LCD) reacts to an input signal. It is the time it takes for a liquid crystal pixel to change from black to white (rise time) and back to black again (fall time). The combined total is the standard response time measurement, expressed in milliseconds (ms).
A slower response time can be detrimental to gameplay. It leaves players with less reaction time and can cause motion blur or ghosting (trailing images), directly impacting performance. Furthermore, in monitors with high dynamic contrast, slow response times during fast-paced bright-to-dark scene transitions can cause eye strain and fatigue.

What Do the Different Response Times Mean?

There are several types of response time metrics, each with a different meaning:
  1. Black-and-White Response Time (Response Time)
This is the earliest parameter standard, more applicable to CRT monitors. It measures the full cycle of a pixel turning from black to white and back to black again. As modern displays rarely switch between pure black and white, this metric is less representative of real-world performance.

  2. Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT)
MPRT is not a measure of pixel transition speed but rather a technique to reduce motion blur. This method briefly turns the backlight off during color transitions to minimize the persistence of an image on the screen. By reducing this afterimage effect, MPRT significantly decreases the perception of ghosting and blur, making motion appear smoother.
Note: This frequent strobing of the backlight can lead to increased eye fatigue for some users.
  3. Gray-to-Gray (GTG) Response Time
Since LCDs create images by controlling the brightness levels of pixels to display different colors, the Gray-to-Gray (GTG) metric measures the transition time between different shades of gray (colors). This is a more practical and relevant standard for today's content. The lower the GTG response time, the better. Currently, GTG is the most common metric advertised for modern monitors.

How to Choose a Monitor Based on Response Time?

In fast-paced gaming, especially during intense combat scenes, a monitor's response time determines whether motion blur or ghosting will appear. This affects not only the visual experience but also in-game performance.
Traditionally, there was a trade-off: TN panels could achieve a fast 1ms response time but suffered from poorer image quality and viewing angles, while IPS panels offered superior color and viewing angles but were typically limited to 4-5ms GTG.
The ideal solution is a monitor that balances both speed and image fidelity. Fast IPS technology has emerged to meet this demand, allowing for significantly faster GTG response times (as low as 1ms) while maintaining the color accuracy and wide viewing angles associated with IPS panels. For serious gamers, a monitor with a low GTG response time and a high refresh rate (e.g., 144Hz or 240Hz) is the key to a competitive edge and a seamless, immersive experience.
